5 Ways To Have a Positive Attitude At Work During A Tough Economy

Maintaining a positive attitude can be tough especially when the economy is down and it’s affecting your workplace. Most of us have been or know somebody who’s been downsized, right-sized, or whatever the current term for it might be. Things can get scary when times get tough. Fortunately, there are several things you can do to help keep your job, or at the very least, minimize your stress and increase your chances of landing on your feet.

The best defense strategy is to do what you can to keep up your positive attitude, stay busy, and keep your options open. Turn your problems into challenges you can act on.

5 Workplace Tips for a Tough Economy

  1. Start working on a backup plan – Start learning new skills in your spare time to make your skill set more marketable. Or you could start a part-time business to provide some extra income and give yourself something to fall back on should you need it.

  2. Stand above the crowd - The star employees of a company will often be the last ones to be let go since they are so valuable. Alternatively, it’s easier to land new employment opportunities if you have a good track record of getting results for the company you were last with.

  3. Begin networking – The more people you know, the easier it is to find a new job if you need to. Try joining some local community or charity groups. Business owners often join these types of groups and this could be a great way to meet them, and make a positive difference in your community.

  4. Keep yourself busy outside of work – Distract yourself from thinking about work when you're not there. Just worrying about something isn't going to stop anything from happening, so why give your time and energy over to worrying? Instead, work on alternate plans, or just have fun with friends or family.

  5. Keep a positive focus – If you find yourself suddenly out of a job, try to look at it as a new opportunity. I understand this is tough to do. Losing a job can be immobilizing. But now you have a chance to start that business you’ve been thinking about. Or it’s the perfect time to go back to school to prepare yourself for a new career. Maybe you can apply at that even better company you’ve had your eye on but needed a stronger impetus to pursue. Every challenge also presents us an opportunity to change, learn, and grow. That's a key part of having a positive attitude.

Take Action

Don’t sit and wait to see if you’ll make it through or not. Start putting a plan in place to increase your chances of staying at your workplace, or at the very least of landing on your feet. This isn’t negative thinking; this is simply putting a plan in place so that you can keep your focus on what you want instead of what you don’t want. This plan will minimize your stress and make it easier to stay positive. To learn more about this topic, please check out the related articles listed at the bottom of the page.
