How To Use A Positive Attitude For Career Success

Having a positive attitude in the workplace can go a long way to helping you experience career success. This article will outline several common-sense changes you can make to that end. You can really make yourself stand out from the crowd by using a positive approach to your work. You may have heard the saying before that people do just enough work so that the company doesn’t fire them, and most employers pay just enough so that their people don’t quit.

Be different from those people. Have a positive attitude and take the initiative to get things done. You will get noticed by those above you. Eventually it will pay off with promotions and raises.

5 Things You Can Do to Become a Star Player at Work

  1. Take initiative – Get rid of that “it’s not my job” attitude. If you were in charge, would you want to give a raise or promotion to somebody with this approach to his or her job? Take initiative instead. Be the person who gets results, who gets things done.

  2. Be enthusiastic – Managers and bosses tend to like and appreciate the employees who are positive and enthusiastic. Constant complaining will get you nowhere fast!

  3. Ask for more challenges – This will show those above you that you have a desire to learn and grow. I’ve talked about this with managers before and they usually value someone who has the right attitude, desire, and initiative over someone who’s educated but lazy.

  4. Invest in yourself – Take the time to learn and grow. Ask others to mentor or teach you what they know. Read books about business and personal development. Go to conferences and seminars. The more knowledge and skills you have, the more valuable you become. You’ll also start becoming more confident and competent at taking on new challenges and responsibilities.

  5. Always do more than expected – Doing what’s expected of you is average. Going the extra mile makes you stand above the crowd. You’ll be noticed and greatly appreciated for taking this step!

These are the traits of star players. These are the people who get raises and promotions. Ask yourself who you would rather promote, the person who has the traits listed above, or the person who does just enough not to get fired? Take advantage of this and get yourself moving up the ladder of career success.

Occasionally there will be a workplace that takes advantage of these types of star players. If that’s you, don’t worry about it too much. Instead, see that as an opportunity to look for somewhere you might be more appropriately appreciated. Eventually other companies will notice you, and new opportunities will come up for you.

For all you managers out there: it’s important that you take notice of your star players. These people are rare, and you may want to go out of your way to take good care of them. These employees are the ones who get results, and that’s really what the bottom line of any job is — results! At the other end of the spectrum, these are all things any staff member can apply, managers included. There’s nothing worse than a bunch of great employees being led by a dud.

Keep a positive attitude and take initiative in the workplace. Career success can start happening for you, too!
