The "It Could Be Worse" Guide To Maintaining A Positive Attitude

I know, the title sounds a bit strange, but I have seen this one tip help people with maintaining a positive attitude throughout their entire life.

The "it could be worse" approach to maintaining a positive attitude was unknowingly taught to me by observing somebodone I've known all my life.  This person never seemed to be down or upset about anything. No matter what was happening around them.

I've seen this person lose their job, lose loved ones, seriously injured, and much more. And never did they complain or seem upset by any of it.

So how did this person do it? Every time something happened that would upset the average person, this unique individual would always be heard saying "it could be worse".

If a job was lost, this person was happy that their was still food to eat and that they weren't starving like many people are in other parts of the world. Life was good compared to a worse scenario.

Another time, a serious accident occured that left this person in severe pain and unable to work or do anything for some time. Instead of being upset or complaining, this person gave thanks that the accident was survived and they lived to see another day.

Why It Works

If you're looking at something in your life that at first glance appear to be negative, and you say to yourself, "Well, it could be worse". Then spend a minute or two thinking about ways that things could be worse, suddenly the present situation doesn't seem so bad in comparison.

Taking this approach to maintaining a positive attitude helps you put people, places, and events in your life into a different perspective. When your perspective on something changes, then your feelings change accordingly.

In reality, how you feel about something may not change that thing. But if you ask yourself, would you rather be happy, or unhappy about something, I'm guessing most people would rather be happy than unhappy. After all, the desire to be happy is what drives most of what we do in life.

Conclusion

Try it out the next time something happens in your life that you feel negatively about. Ask yourself how things could be worse and see if your feelings about the current situation change.

Oh, and if you're wondering who this person is that taught me this technique by being a living example to me. It was my father. Thanks Dad, for showing me this great technique for maintaining a positive attitude!
